Journal Entry #3 Questions

This entry considers the final third of the novel.

§ What is the climax of the novel?

§ How are the major and minor conflicts resolved?

§ What were the major things that helped to resolve the plot?

§ What message did you get from the novel? How was this message conveyed?

§ How realistic is the novel? Could the depicted society exist?

§ Now that you have completed the novel, how would you say that it relates to the theme of dystopia?

§ Why would you (or why wouldn't you) recommend this novel to another student?

8th Grade Speeches - If your child has a speech coming up, please make sure he/she has sat with me at least once 1 week prior to their speech. It would also be helpful if you worked with him/her on it. These are a BIG deal for our amazing 8th graders. We all want them to succeed and feel proud of themselves for giving this speech. Please be in communication with me if you are unsure if your child has worked with me.

FIELD STUDIES - We are off to Orenco Station tomorrow! I hope you are having interesting conversations about our Urban Planning Studies. It really is fun, interesting and difficult all at the same time.

Journal Entry #2 Questions

This entry considers the second third of the novel.

§ What new things are added to the original problem as the novel progresses?

§ What plot twists or unexpected events happen as the novel progresses?

§ Are there any “rebels” in your novel who oppose that society? Who are they? What do they think and do? Do you think their actions will be successful?

§ Comment on the style of the novel. Is it easy or difficult to follow the events?

§ Is the language in the novel difficult or easy? To what age group do you think the novel is best suited? Why?

§ Is there a message or main theme emerging in the book? How is it shown?

§ Describe any new characters that have been introduced since Journal Entry One. What purpose/role do these new characters serve?

§ What predictions, if any, can you make as to the outcome of the novel at this point?

§ Do you see any similarities between our society and the society in your novel? Explain

Quick Thursday Pearl Highlight
~We had a great trip to the Pearl District where we listened to different businesses, made park observations, discussed planned neighborhoods and much more! We were able to answer one of our questions during reflection at Tanner Springs about why isn't there any fish...Well as we were sharing out, a Coopers Hawk swooped down and grabbed a fish out of the park and flew right over us. Now we know the answer to that one!
