Field Trip Tommorow!- Salmon Street Fountain!

We wil be riding the bus down to the Salmon Sreet Fountain tommorow. We will do some activties with Indigo's class, then we will play in the fountain. If you want to get wet in the fountain, make sure to wear appropriate clothing and bring a towl.

Welcome to an exciting year of the mountain at SES, which involves the coming together of geology, climate, ecology, and culture to tell the story of continual transformation and adaptation. These themes will be woven together as we try to understand how we are all interconnected and a part of the remarkable and constantly changing planet Earth.

This fall we will explore the geography and geology of our Pacific Northwest while looking at how this land influences the people who live here now and have lived here in the past.  We will also explore other mountain areas around the world and look at the cultures there.

This winter we will study refugees from around the world during the Martin Luther King Service Learning Unit.  Later we will jump into an in depth study of the multiple facets of one ancient culture and create an interpretive museum.  Finally, we will get out our passports and take off on a ‘trip around the world,’ exploring culture, geography, and conflict around the world today. 

These large integrated units are supported throughout the year by literature investigations, morning meeting, writer’s workshop, service learning opportunities, gardening, science lab, weekly field studies, art, technology, P.E., and lots more…

I am looking forward to working with all of you through this year of growth and change over time. We will lay down layers and foundations, influence shifts and upheavals, and climb to the tops of places and ideas for a better view.  I value communication, structure, and flexibility.  I plan on an academically rigorous year full of challenging topics to grapple with, opportunities for growth, and many chances to have fun and push our limits.

Here are some details:

• Daily planners will be used for organization. Our class blog can be viewed at www.coriclass.blogspot.com
• Thursday is our ‘travel day’. Be on the lookout for a signup genius from Marie!!!
• We are monitoring Brookside as our site this year,--making inquiries, collecting data, and designing investigations. 
• We will always be reading a novel, either all class, small group, or individual choice.  Students are expected to read at least 30 minutes per night and can have another book they are reading besides the class book.
• We are Buddies with Michelle’s 1^st/2^nd grade class.
